Merci Maman

I love getting mail, small/big parcels from France, so I did a little dance a few days ago when I found something from my mother in our mail box.  Sometimes she sends unexpected (and odd) things, like books on vinegar and bicarb soda I don’t remember asking for or discussing with her??  But this time she sent something I remembered asking for: a big Michelin map of France.

No idea where it is going to go for the moment but I’m collecting ideas, like this one.

A French word for you: ménage

Posted in regular by Sabine on September 13, 2009

I am not referring to anything saucy, but to simple cleaning.  This is what we have spent our weekend doing.  I inhaled fumes from bleach, mould killer, windex and pine disinfectant – so much so that my throat feels very scratchy.  I hope I still have enough brain cells to rub together to start a fire.

And here are Christian’s thoughts: ‘Housework.  I hate it, I hate it like flies hate spiders.  Like Oprah hates David Letterman.  You want to know the deal about housekeeping?  That shit gets dirty again.  What’s the point?’

Indeed.

Life post scarf

Knitted coffee sleeve

I have been knitting Christian a ribbed bamboo scarf for what seems like ages…  And I know, the worst of the cold weather is now behind us…

Maybe I should attempt this as my next project.  I said attempt, not succeed.

Birthday candles

Today is my sister Sophie’s birthday (she’s turning 36!).  The following list is a short collection of reasons why I love her and she is amazing:

  • The night I was born (when she was 5), her first thought when she was told she had a little sister was ‘Yay, I’m so happy!’.
  • She put up for years with me waking her up by shining a flashlight in her face at night asking her to play with me.
  • She made me pee my pants at the age of 17 by making me laugh really hard.
  • She let me sleep in her room for a week after I saw Silence of the Lambs and was too scared on my own.
  • She pelted me with Basmati rice on my wedding day.
  • She writes poetry and she introduced me to Arthur Rimbaud.
  • She always cut my hair on demand, and it always looked good.
  • She smells really nice.
  • She is always put in charge of breaking bad news to me, and when she does she works in laughs and lightheartedness.
  • She put up a picture of the New Zealand rugby team doing a warrior dance in the kitchen of our Paris apartment.
  • She has green and orange cat’s eyes and the tiniest hands.
  • She gave me my first nephew.

Happy birthday and kisses Sophie!  I miss you!

Moved

Posted in regular by Sabine on September 5, 2009

So if you are wondering where I have been (who knows, maybe you have – or maybe at this late hour I am feeling self-important) – moving apartments, that’s where.

Because I am a germaphobic neat freak I have spent the last 4 days with a dust mask on my face, and armed with a bottle of bleach and a toothbrush I’ve cleaned our new place (and a bottle of pine disinfectant).

We are happy in our new home.  We are sore from moving things (we did it all ourselves!!  I have renewed admiration for Christian’s handiness and practicality and may I say he looks damn good loading furniture and washing machines on a trolley).  We are forever splashing ourselves with the taps since the water pressure in our old place was really low – so months of overcompensating makes for a drenched Christian and a drenched Sabine.

I am also nose-bleeding a little, and since we’re on the 10th floor we giggle that it’s the altitude.

And now, I am going to collapse into bed: there’s still much more to do in the morning.

Good night, I hope you’re happy in your own little homes!
