A Daily Thing

You look like a cliché

Posted in regular by Sabine on June 8, 2010

I love Anna Bond’s illustrations and stationery – to the point I am thinking about commissioning a portrait of us for our 10th (crikey!) wedding anniversary this year.

And I love this print of hats – which includes a béret, which I can’t get away with wearing without being called a cliché by Christian (he’s probably right).

You can buy the illustration here, and look at the rest of Rifle’s shop here.

Ork Posters!

Posted in regular by Sabine on June 1, 2010

I love Ork Posters (and they are so enthusiastic they put an exclamation mark after their name!).

I love this – it reminds me of Monsieur Alfonse and his ‘teekie teeker’.

Ork also does a handful of city neighbourhood posters (only US and Canada though…  Guys, Paris?).

Buy the Heart print here, and see everything else here.

April Fish

Posted in regular by Sabine on April 1, 2010

I’m not a prankster: I can’t lie so I can’t  pull any prank off with a straight face.  And I’m not big on pinning paper fish on people’s backs either (or checking my own regularly).

So my contribution to April Fish is the list below, a compendium of amusing (and self-centered) ‘me’ facts – which may or may not be true.  Pointless, but isn’t that what today is all about?

*I met Paul Keating – the Australian Prime Minister in office – when I was 12 years old, and asked him for an autograph.

*Despite being one of the stereotypical and quintessential French foods worldwide, I have never in my life eaten a single frog leg.  I have however eaten one snail (just the one, that was enough).  So that makes Christian a clear winner since he  has eaten many more snails than I have.

*I was born at midnight sharp, so my father got to choose my birthday and the time on my birth certificate had to be doctored by two minutes.

*Instead of 32, I only have 24 teeth.

*My sister and I have a large freckle in the exact same spot (like the sisters in the Demoiselles de Rochefort).

*My great great grandmother Rosalie had a pet monkey.

Wishing you a good April Fish, and remember to watch your backs!  (I just mean for paper fish – this is sounding a lot more sinister than I intended).

If you feel so inclined, please tell me something random about yourself.  And yes, in the spirit of today you can punk me and make it a whopper (as long as you later reveal it wasn’t true – otherwise that’s just mean).

Vroum

Posted in regular by Sabine on March 29, 2010

From Friday to Sunday a bunch of men in jumpsuits and helmets drove their cars really fast around Albert Park lake, exactly like in that picture (no, not really).

We live pretty close so for three days we heard what seemed like an industrious angry bee swarm every afternoon.

All this culminated in a freaking fighter jet flying circles yesterday just before the big race, and it was SO loud and boomed SO much, when we went out on our balcony to see it I hid behind Christian.  Just a little.

I love this poster by the way, which I believe can be picked up from the one place where I would spend a lot of my money in a heartbeat: Galerie Montmartre in Fitzroy.  Vroum.

The Cult of Done

Posted in regular by Sabine on March 20, 2010

The Cult of Done is a manifesto written in 20 minutes because the author, Bre Pettis, only had 20 minutes to do it.  Ha!!  Its 13 points all make great sense and re-invigorate me every time I read it.

And it exists in poster form (courtesy of Joshua Rothhaas), which I obviously really want (I even have a wall already picked out for it, Christian what do you say?).

Side effects

Posted in regular by Sabine on February 27, 2010

Being a French expatriate has done the following things to me:

*Cemented my inner stubborn and indignant on particular issues (familiarity, health care, Southern Hemisphere seasons to name a few)

*Made me pine for the map of France when watching the weather forecast

*Introduced me to Conan O’Brien, David Letterman, and other Christian favourites that I can now share with him (also introduced me to Oprah – whose existence I was not aware of before then – and just to clear things up, not a Christian favourite)

*Made me feel like I discover treasure every time I hear French spoken, or rediscover an expression I have not used in a while

*Made me realise direct translations from French, as well as gestures, are not always understood

*Made me develop a love for all these kitschy stereotypical things – like that pop-up accordéon postcard and anything in the shape of the Eiffel tower

About that last point: I am actually very restrained and never buy the kitschy things I lust after.  It may have something to do with the slight inner shame I feel about it…

Hard to digest

Posted in regular by Sabine on February 16, 2010

I hail from a line of lightweights when it comes to digestion (having inherited my Maman’s very sensitive stomach), and this image pretty much sums up how I was feeling yesterday.

Except I didn’t take any Alka Seltzer.  Or shoot an arrow into a bear’s bum.

(Can’t remember where the image is from…  Sorry).

To Coco, with love from Sabine

Posted in regular by Sabine on January 14, 2010

I find him and his hair mildly frightening when I’ve had whisky, but I love him all the same. And I will keep on loving and watching him no matter which network he is on.  I am totally with Coco.

You can join the Coco movement on Facebook, and too many other places to list.  Some days I really love the internet :)

Spare change

Posted in regular by Sabine on December 27, 2009

If I had a cool spare $900 (US!) I wouldn’t mind buying a vintage Air France poster.

First one from here, and second one via Frogsmoke but I can’t find the damn link anymore (sorry Romke!).
