Breakfasts

Posted in regular by Sabine on October 13, 2009

Porridge, Brazil nuts and pineapple juice
Adzuki beans, avocado and jam toasts

I can’t commit to one thing for breakfast and eat it day after day.  So I have a rotation of breakfasts that have to be simple enough for my 5:30 ‘I just staggered out of bed’ lack of coordination, but be interesting enough that I won’t be depressed with each bite.  Word of advice, don’t look at this before having breakfast or most likely you will be depressed.

You shouldn’t be fooled by the first picture’s apparent simplicity: this is no ordinary porridge, it’s Jeremy’s porridge (or oats?  Can you say either or?).

And the poor second picture belongs to the class of foods that are delicious to eat but ugly to look at.  Don’t start sniggering that I am eating maggots: they’re sweetened adzuki beans (and if you still see a lot of beans in there, it’s because I’m not very coordinated at 5:30, remember?).  If you have ever tried making Daifuku, instead of burning your fingers and/or sticking them together with impossible to work with hot molten rice paste, just make the filling and spread it on toast.  There.

Shiitake, onion and artichoke gnocchi

Posted in regular by Sabine on October 8, 2009

Let me profess my love for gnocchi: they are little pillows of potato, they can combine well with almost anything and they cook really fast.

Recipe is in the comments.  Did I say how much I love gnocchi?

That’s bright isn’t it?  The light in my kitchen is awkward so I resorted to flash.

Recipe in the comments.

Vegan Month of Food

Posted in regular by Sabine on October 5, 2009

I’m not a very old vegan (maybe 5-ish months old), but I decided to take part in this year’s VMOF (or Vegan Mofo, which sounds really bad ass!).  This means I will be posting pictures of what I make for breakfast, lunch and dinner (and snacks) about 5 days a week.  For those of you who are interested, recipes for everything will be in the comments.  For those of you who aren’t, I won’t be only posting about vegan food all month so hopefully you won’t be too bored!

(I stole the banner from Kittee, who stole it from Katie.)

Oats à la Jeremy

Posted in regular by Sabine on September 16, 2009

I met Jeremy through my beautiful friend Jen (who likes straws, remember?), and on top of being a lovely guy and a snappy dresser he gave me this amazing trick to make oats.

This is what I learnt:

*Soak the oats first (I use rice or soy milk, I can’t stand oats made with water)

*Simmer the oats without EVER bringing to the boil (I think he mentioned half an hour – I personally can’t wait that long).

*Turn off the flame, leave them to rest (for as long as you can stand to wait).

*Turn the flame back on, simmer again.  You might need to add more milk at this point if the oats have solidified a bit.

My life (and breakfasts, or lunches as is the case today) will never be the same again.

Thank you so much Jeremy!

Errr

Posted in regular by Sabine on August 20, 2009

So I’m cooking amaranth for lunch, which I’m told is a fantastic source of protein and iron (handy for a vegan diet right?).  Except, as it’s simmering it kind of smells like cat pee…..  I am not so enthusiastic to try it now :(

Down the rabbit hole, and Chinese take-away

Posted in regular by Sabine on August 15, 2009

I had a sleep-in this morning, and a strange Alice in Wonderland kind of dream, where we ate Chinese food.  And in my dream, the Chinese food was vegan.  I woke up chuckling, and kind of hungry ;)

Food questionnaire

Posted in regular by Sabine on August 5, 2009

I found this here and decided to do it:

Sweet or salty?

I like both, but I don’t eat sugar – if I want something sweet I have to work for it and make it myself!  Or buy ridiculously expensive sugar-free treats, like Mrs May’s nuts which are highly addictive.

Chocolate or vanilla?

Hmmm, both?  Is that cheating?

Hot or mild?

I cannot handle spice.  No no.

What won’t you eat?

I’m making the transition from vegetarian to vegan right now, so there are a LOT of things I won’t eat.  Aside from the obvious foods, I don’t eat sugar as stated above: it’s everywhere and doesn’t really need to be, so I use other more natural (less refined) sweeteners instead.

Most memorable meal?

Dinner on wedding day: just Christian and I, I ate a big plate of vegetables including long green string beans with olive oil and rock salt, and fresh bread.  I remember our conversation too.

Favourite object in your kitchen?

I like our kettle: it lights up in blue when it’s switched on, and it dings when the water has boiled.  Except it is temperamental and sometimes turns off on its own.  I also like my small grater which is called Alexander.

What are you scared of in the kitchen?

Sharpening knives.  I find it very creepy, always have (see Delicatessen for example).  So my knives are blunt, which means I have to use more force, and when I do cut myself it really hurts.  So Christian sharpens the knives for me.

Do you prefer to cook alone or with others?

Our kitchen is tiny so I tend to cook alone.  But I don’t mind company.

What country would you move to for the food?

See, growing up as an omnivore in France is one thing.  Moving back to France as a vegan another.  Still I’ll be patriotic on this one.

If you were to come back as a fruit or vegetable, what would you be?

Can I be a nut?  Hazelnut then so I could be turned into one of these.

What’s for dinner?

I don’t know yet!
